People Food!

So...my husband (I like to blame things on him) has turned me into a cheapskate.  I used to just buy what I wanted, sometimes without even looking at the price tag (I know, I know...I was bad).  But, Chris has helped me see the error of my ways.  So, naturally, when we started looking at adding some solid foods into Collier's diet, I was shocked at the prices of those little jars ($1 a serving!  Seriously...it's like a 1/4 cup of veggies).  Add in the opportunity to ensure that Collier is getting the most nutritious food possible, and making our own baby food was a no-brainer.

After a successful few weeks on cereal...

Obviously, this kiddo loves his cereal
We bought a book to help direct us in making our own food.

Turns out, there are only three (super easy) steps to making food:  cook, puree, and freeze.  We decided to start with sweet potatoes.  I bought a fancy "baby food" freezer tray to compare with regular ice cube trays.  It was 8 times the price, and totally not worth it--it was harder to get the cubes out of.

Puree-action

The final step...try it out on the babe.  Collier had his first taste on Saturday, September 1st.  The verdict? He loved it!  He says "mmm" after every bite he eats, probably because we do that too.  It's still pretty cute.

The first bite of "real" people food

I think he likes it!
Since then, we've also tried out green beans.  Also very easy to make (steam-puree-freeze), and to a great response.
mmm....green beans

I feel sure that we'll still purchase some of the jarred baby foods for travelling and things, but I feel really good about deciding to make our own.  It was the right decision for us, and kind of fun too!
